ABOUT ME

Protecting the Rights of the Accused Since 2013

I was born and raised on Long Island. I graduated from the State University of New York at Albany in 1995 with a B.A. in Political Science. After working for a few years in my family's business, I attended Hofstra University School of Law and graduated with honors in 2004 and was a member of the Hofstra Law Review.

Immediately upon graduation, I began my career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office where I spent nearly every day in a courtroom practicing criminal law. During my nine-year career, I was assigned to the District Court Bureau, the East End Bureau, the Case Advisory Bureau, the Major Crime Bureau, and the Vehicular Crime Bureau. I earned a reputation as a skilled trial attorney and tried numerous cases to verdict including Driving While Intoxicated, Vehicular Assault, Manslaughter, and Attempted Murder. I prosecuted cases in First District Court in Central Islip, most of the Village Courts in the five western towns of Suffolk County, all the Justice Courts of the five eastern towns, and County Court and Supreme Court in Riverhead.

In 2012 when the District Attorney of Suffolk County chose to prosecute driving while intoxicated and crimes arising out of motor vehicle crashes more aggressively, I was one of just three Assistant District Attorneys selected from among 175 attorneys to be a member of the Vehicular Crime Unit, which later became the Vehicular Crime Bureau. While there, I was on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to the scenes of motor vehicle crashes to assist detectives with their investigations and would handle those cases from the scene to arrest to final disposition.

Upon my retirement from the District Attorney's Office in October 2013, I opened the Law Office of Ian T. Fitzgerald to put my experience and skill to work for you.

I have successfully defended clients in Superior Court in Riverhead and the local criminal courts of Southampton, East Hampton, Westhampton, and Quogue.  I know that being accused of a crime can be overwhelming and that you need an experienced attorney who knows the system to protect your rights every step of the way. I try to make all my clients feel as if they are my only client. 24 hours a day, seven days a week I am here to help you.

Ian T. Fitzgerald.
